Central Jail of Nicosia

The Central Jail of Nicosia encompasses three sections: a high-security area, an open prison section, and a rehabilitation guidance center for inmates.

British authorities constructed this correctional facility in 1894, establishing it as the primary detention center for both convicted individuals and defendants awaiting trial.

The prison maintains a museum section featuring the Imprisoned Graves of 13 EOKA fighters, along with preserved condemned cells and a gallows room.

Inmates participate in vocational training programs through multiple workshops, including kitchen facilities, farming operations, and educational classrooms within the prison grounds.

During the 1974 Turkish invasion, corrections officers and national guard members successfully defended the prison from military capture through direct combat.
