Catacomb of Phaneromeni Church, Underground catacomb beneath Greek Orthodox church in Larnaca, Cyprus.
The Catacomb of Phaneromeni Church is an underground burial space carved into rock with two separate chambers linked by connecting passages. A stairway positioned about 23 feet (7 meters) from the church's east wall provides access down to this subterranean complex.
The structure may originate from the 8th century when it possibly served as a Phoenician burial site before being repurposed. Over time, it was transformed into a Christian sacred space and incorporated beneath the Orthodox church above.
The site holds deep meaning for the Greek Orthodox community, who gather for services in the church above while honoring the sacred chambers below. Pilgrims visit seeking spiritual connection and healing through prayer at this layered place of worship.
You can reach the chambers by climbing an external staircase that leads directly down into the underground space. Remember to act respectfully throughout your visit, as this remains an active place of worship for the community.
Local tradition involves visitors walking around the catacomb three times while leaving personal items at the south window for healing purposes. People have long believed this practice can ease headaches and other physical troubles.
