Roßfeld, Mountain peak in Berchtesgaden Alps, Austria and Germany.
Roßfeld is a mountain peak in the Berchtesgaden Alps that straddles the border between Austria and Germany. The summit rises to 1537 meters and displays varied terrain with meadows and rock formations that differ notably on each side of the border.
Roßfeld formed during the Early Cretaceous period some 130 million years ago from sandstone and sedimentary rock layers. Its present shape developed through tectonic forces that lifted and shaped these layers into a prominent ridge.
The mountain slopes accommodate winter sports enthusiasts with 9 kilometers of ski runs and multiple lifts across the German section.
A toll road crosses the mountain and connects different sections on both sides of the border. Visitors should prepare for changing weather and wear suitable footwear for uneven terrain.
The eastern flank drops steeply toward the Salzachtal valley with an elevation difference of around 1000 meters. This sharp descent creates vastly different landscapes and wind patterns on each side.
