Shamakhi District, Administrative district in eastern Azerbaijan
Located at 749 meters elevation, Shamakhi District spans 1,670 square kilometers and contains multiple rivers flowing through mountainous landscapes.
The district capital served as the center of Shirvanshah state from the 8th to 15th centuries and maintained strong connections along the Silk Road.
The Juma Mosque, constructed in the 8th century, stands as the oldest mosque in Azerbaijan and continues to function as a religious center.
The district maintains 72 secondary schools, vocational colleges, and a branch of Azerbaijan Teachers Institute to serve its population of 106,400 residents.
Three major earthquakes in 1191, 1667, and 1859 reshaped the district's architecture and led to significant population movements across the region.
