Əsgəran, city in the Khojaly District of Azerbaijan
Əsgəran is a small settlement in the Khojaly District of Azerbaijan, located along the Qarqar River. The area is known for its stone fortress, which was built on both sides of the river and features thick walls and square corner towers.
The fortress at Əsgəran was built in the 18th century by the local ruler Pәnahәli xan as part of a defensive system for the Karabakh Khanate. In the early 19th century, the site gained importance as Russian and Iranian forces moved through the area during their military campaigns.
The name Əsgəran comes from a Persian word meaning soldier or guard, which reflects the role this place once played in the region. Visitors walking near the fortress can still see how the structure sits above the river, giving a clear sense of why this spot was chosen for defense.
The fortress is within walking distance from the center of the settlement, and following the river path gives a good view of the walls from both sides. Sturdy footwear is useful since some sections of the ground are uneven and can be wet depending on the season.
The fortress was designed so that the river itself acted as part of the defense, with walls on each bank covering the crossing points. This use of the river as a structural element of the fortification is rarely seen in other examples from that period in the South Caucasus.
