Shaki-Zagatala Economic Region, Economic region in northern Azerbaijan
The Shaki-Zagatala Economic Region spans northern Azerbaijan with three distinct geographical zones: the Greater Caucasus slopes, the Ganikh-Haftaran Valley, and the Central Kur Highland. It comprises six administrative districts organized across these varying landscapes and elevations.
The region contains the city of Shaki, which originated as the ancient settlement of Nuxa and developed into an economic hub during the Safavid Empire. This transformation established its prominence as a key center across several centuries.
Different ethnic groups in the six districts practice traditional crafts, particularly silk production and carpet weaving that reflect local identity. These skills remain central to how communities express their heritage through everyday work.
The Yevlakh-Balaken railway line runs through the region as the main transportation artery connecting multiple districts. This rail connection makes it easier for visitors to reach different areas and communities across the landscape.
Mount Bazardüzü sits on the border between Azerbaijan and Russia at about 4,466 feet (1,361 meters) elevation and marks one of the highest peaks in the Caucasus range. This peak attracts climbers who seek its technical challenges and the alpine landscape surrounding it.
