Saint Karapet Monastery of Aprakunis

Saint Karapet Monastery is a religious building in Əbrəqunus with thick basalt walls, a tall brick dome rising above the structure, and wings extending on either side of the main area. The original layout contained multiple interior chambers arranged in a traditional church design.

The monastery was founded in 1381 by a Crimean monk and grew to become an important center for scholarship and religious learning. Over time, prominent scholars and teachers gathered there to develop its reputation as a place of study and contemplation.

The monastery once displayed artworks on its interior walls featuring religious figures created by local artists in the 1700s. These painted details reflected the spiritual importance the site held for the surrounding community.

The site lies in a remote mountainous area and can be difficult to reach during bad weather or winter months. Visiting during warmer seasons provides better access and clearer views of the remaining structures and surrounding landscape.

People in the region once believed that sacred objects kept at the site could cure snake bite wounds. This belief brought travelers and pilgrims from distant places seeking healing and relief from their ailments.
