City of Banja Luka, Capital city on Vrbas River in northern Bosnia and Herzegovina
Banja Luka is the second largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina, situated along the Vrbas River in a valley surrounded by forested hills. The urban area spreads across both riverbanks with residential neighborhoods, public spaces, and views toward distant mountains.
The city began as a Roman settlement and developed into an Ottoman administrative center in the 16th century. In 1992, after the wars of the 1990s, it became the capital of Republika Srpska.
The National Theatre serves as a gathering place where locals and visitors experience performances that reflect the region's creative traditions. Throughout the city, museums display regional art, traditional crafts, and everyday objects that show how people lived in earlier times.
The central bus station links the city to major European destinations, while the airport provides regular flights to nearby regions. Walking through the downtown area is the best way to explore shops, cafés, and public squares at your own pace.
Kastel Fortress sits on Roman foundations and was built in the 16th century to overlook the left riverbank. The structure shows how different cultures constructed their military buildings on top of earlier foundations in the same location.
