Hemnagar Zamindar Bari

Hemnagar Zamindar Bari is a two-story mansion in Gopalpur divided into three main sections with numerous rooms and two large ponds featuring paved waterfront access. The structure displays intricate craftsmanship with decorative glass and stonework that characterize its exterior design.

The mansion was built in 1890 by Hemchandra Chowdhury as the administrative center of the Shimulia Pargana zamindari estate. The family departed the property following India's partition and relocated to Calcutta.

The building combines Islamic arches with Greek design elements, displaying colorful glass inserts that show flowers, stars, and geometric patterns throughout its exterior. This blend of different styles reflects the cultural mixing that existed in this region during the colonial period.

The site is accessible by taking a bus from Dhaka's Mohakhali terminal to Gopalpur, followed by a local auto-rickshaw ride to reach the property. The grounds are extensive with multiple areas to explore, so visitors should plan for adequate time to walk around.

Locals call the building the fairy palace, even though its original architectural features and sprawling grounds remain intact today. The structure now houses a college, which means its historical rooms are filled with contemporary academic activities.
