French Community of Belgium, Federal linguistic community in Belgium
The French Community of Belgium is one of three communities within federal Belgium responsible for education, culture and language policy in Wallonia and Brussels. It oversees schools, libraries, theatres and broadcasting services for French-speaking residents across these regions.
Constitutional reforms in 1980 created this community as a separate entity with powers over education and culture. Further reforms in the 1990s transferred additional responsibilities to the community.
The Parliament of the French Community, consisting of 94 members, implements decrees that regulate education, arts, media, and language policies for French speakers.
Regional offices throughout Wallonia and Brussels provide support for educational and cultural programmes. Most services can also be accessed through online platforms.
The parliament meets in Brussels and shares its building with other institutions in the capital. Members often serve simultaneously in regional and community assemblies.
