Caves of Han-sur-Lesse, Show cave in Han-sur-Lesse, Belgium.
The Caves of Han-sur-Lesse are a cave system in the municipality of Rochefort in Belgium, shaped by the interaction between river and limestone. The site includes several large chambers and passages on different levels, linked by a circuit with steps and walkways.
The cave became known in the 18th century and was opened to visitors, with the first organized tours starting toward the end of the 19th century. Over time, lighting and pathways were installed to make access to the deeper sections easier.
The Lesse River disappears into the rock at one point and reemerges about a kilometer downstream, while visitors follow through the chambers. Most tours end with a view of the spot where the water returns to daylight after its underground course.
The temperature remains around 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit) throughout the year, so warm clothing is advisable. Visits take place with a guide and usually last between one and one and a half hours depending on the chosen route.
In one of the chambers, the path crosses a series of bridges over the river and deeper fissures, allowing visitors to explore the cave at any season. This construction replaced earlier boats that depended on water levels.
