Domain of the caves of Han, Limestone cave and safari park complex in Han-sur-Lesse, Belgium.
The Domain of the Caves of Han is a nature and leisure site near the village of Han-sur-Lesse, in the municipality of Rochefort in the Belgian Ardennes. It combines a large limestone cave network with a wildlife park where several European animal species live.
The caves were opened to visitors in the 19th century after explorers mapped the underground passages carved by the Lesse River. Objects found inside, dating back to the Stone and Bronze Ages, show that people used this place long before modern times.
The name of the domain comes from the village of Han-sur-Lesse, where the Lesse River disappears underground and flows through the cave system. In the wildlife park, visitors can observe animals that once roamed the Ardennes, such as bison and bears.
The site is open throughout the year, but sturdy, slip-resistant footwear is recommended for the caves, as some sections are wet. A warm layer is also a good idea, since the temperature underground stays low and constant regardless of the season.
At the end of the cave tour, there is a sound and light show held inside one of the largest underground chambers, which uses the natural acoustics of the space. The chamber is tall enough that a small church would fit inside it.
