Irechek, Mountain summit in Rila Mountains, Bulgaria
Iretschek is a mountain summit in the Rila range that offers sweeping views across numerous neighboring peaks in the Bulgarian mountains. The route follows marked trails with varying terrain and demands good physical conditioning and careful footing.
The peak was named after Constantin Jireček, a Czech historian who studied Bulgarian history extensively during the 1800s. His research significantly shaped understanding of the region's past.
The peak bears the name of Konstantin Jireček, a Czech historian employed by the Bulgarian government after 1878 to research Bulgarian history. The summit stands above the Musala Cirque, which holds the Musala Lakes, and neighbours Musala and Deno.
Irechek is not a marked or maintained trail peak: the summit is unmarked and avalanche-prone, so winter and spring ascents require snow assessment and equipment. It rises beside Musala and Deno above the Musala Cirque and its lakes, so plan the approach from that side and allow for the altitude of 2,852 m.
Irechek is the third-highest summit in Rila at 2,852 m, after Musala (2,925 m) and Malka Musala (2,902 m). It rises beside Musala and Deno (2,790 m) on the eastern side of the Musala Cirque, which holds the Musala Lakes. The sources describe the peak as unglaciated and prone to avalanches.
