McMaster University, Public research university in Hamilton, Canada
McMaster University is a public research university in Hamilton with several academic faculties and a mix of older stone buildings and newer research centers. The grounds stretch across wooded hills west of downtown and include residence halls, laboratories, and a large central library.
The institution opened as a Baptist college in Toronto in 1887 and moved to Hamilton in 1930. Over the following decades it developed into a secular research university with a focus on medicine and natural sciences.
The campus offers access to several preserved green areas, including wooded sections and trails along the Cootes Paradise wetland. Students and visitors use these areas for walking and birdwatching throughout the year.
Main entrances are located along Main Street West, from where visitor paths lead to the central buildings and library. Public areas are generally accessible during daytime hours, while certain research buildings require secured access.
The institution operates a research reactor on campus, used for medical isotopes and materials research. This reactor was the first at a Commonwealth university and remains a central element of scientific training.
