Greater Montreal

Greater Montreal is an administrative unit in Quebec that brings together 82 municipalities along the Saint Lawrence River. The territory extends from the downtown core through suburbs to smaller towns with residential areas, industrial zones, and farmland.

The metropolitan community came into being in 2001 to coordinate land planning and environmental protection across municipal borders. The structure replaced earlier administrative forms and allowed shared decisions for growing edge communities.

The region operates mainly in French in daily life, with many signs, menus, and conversations reflecting this language. The local food culture mixes French cafés with bagel bakeries and poutine spots found on many street corners.

The Exo network connects suburbs to the downtown area through commuter trains and buses that run more frequently during peak hours. Visitors heading to outlying municipalities should plan for travel time, as distances can be considerable.

A conservation plan tries to preserve and connect green corridors running through multiple municipalities. This measure aims to protect almost a third of the territory by the year 2030.
