Bernina Range, Mountain range in Grisons, Switzerland
The Bernina Range is a mountain group between southeastern Switzerland and northern Italy reaching heights up to 4,049 meters (13,284 feet). The region is defined by eight major valleys and features numerous glaciers alongside steep gorges.
Swiss mountaineer Johann Coaz accomplished the first recorded ascent of Bernina Peak in 1850. This event marked the beginning of documented climbing history in this mountain range.
The railway crossing the Bernina Pass earned UNESCO World Heritage recognition for its remarkable engineering design. It traverses the mountainous landscape with viaducts and tunnels that still impress travelers today.
Several mountain huts like Chamanna da Coaz and Rifugio Marco e Rosa offer overnight stays for visitors. With proper preparation and suitable gear, hikers and climbers can explore the area at various difficulty levels.
The area is divided by eight notable valleys including Valmalenco, Engadin, Roseg, and Val Poschiavo. These natural depressions form distinct boundaries and give each section of the range its own character.
