University of Hong Kong, Public research university in Central and Western District, Hong Kong.
The University of Hong Kong is a public research institution with its main campus in the Central and Western District and additional sites in the Southern and Yuen Long Districts. The complex houses ten faculties, including Architecture, Arts, Business, Dentistry, Education, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Science, and Social Sciences, offering a wide range of academic programs.
Governor Frederick Lugard founded the institution in 1911 in response to the growing demand for higher education in the region. The addition of Chinese language programs in the 1920s marked a turning point, deepening connections to the local population and the Chinese mainland.
The name reflects its role as the city's first higher education institution, founded on British models, now a place where students from around the world study among modern towers and colonial buildings. On the main campus in Central and Western District, visitors see a mix of old brick structures and contemporary glass facades, while daily life is shaped by an international crowd.
Access to the campus is easiest from HKU MTR station, which connects to a system of pedestrian walkways. Most public areas, including the library and some exhibition spaces, are open to visitors, while other sections remain reserved for students and staff.
The institution's library opened in 1912, making it the oldest academic library in Hong Kong. Today it holds more than two million books, journals, and digital resources spread across multiple locations throughout the campus.
