Crane Mosque

The Crane Mosque is an ancient house of worship in Yangzhou featuring stone structures, historic wells, and a spacious interior prayer hall. The grounds include stone lecterns positioned throughout the compound, with walls defining the enclosed space.

Founded in 1275 to serve Arab merchants, the building underwent major renovations during the Ming Dynasty that shaped its current appearance. These changes reflect the evolving needs of the community over centuries.

The mosque serves as a gathering place where believers come together for prayers and religious celebrations. It demonstrates how Islamic and Chinese building traditions merged into a single architectural approach.

The site sits on Nanmen Street where some areas welcome visitors, though prayer rooms remain restricted out of respect for those worshipping. The exterior structures and courtyards are generally available to view.

The entire complex is said to echo the outline of a crane, with the entrance serving as the head and pathways representing the neck and wing areas. This subtle design weaves the local environment into the sacred layout.
