HKU station, Metro station in Shek Tong Tsui, Hong Kong
HKU station is a metro station located in the western part of Hong Kong Island with an island platform configuration serving trains in both directions. The underground facility sits approximately 70 meters below ground and provides access through six separate exits, each equipped with lifts to street level.
The station opened in December 2014 as part of a major expansion of the Island Line westward on Hong Kong Island. This extension improved transit connections to areas that previously relied on other transportation methods.
The station takes its name from the nearby University of Hong Kong and serves as a daily hub for students and university employees moving through the city. Passengers use this stop to connect the campus with residential areas, workplaces, and entertainment districts across Hong Kong Island.
The station has wide stairways and multiple lifts at all six exits, making it easy to move up and down even with luggage or strollers. Signage in several languages and digital information displays help visitors navigate to different exits and understand platform directions.
This station holds the distinction of being the deepest in the entire MTR network at approximately 70 meters below ground, requiring specialized engineering during construction. The extreme depth posed significant challenges that were solved through innovative techniques to ensure long-term structural stability.
