Kawagarbo

Kawagarbo rises to 6,740 meters, forming the highest peak in Yunnan Province with permanent snow cover and glaciers on its slopes.

The mountain region became part of Yunnan during the Qing Dynasty in the 1720s when authorities established the current border with Tibet.

Each year, 20,000 pilgrims undertake a 240-kilometer circular trek around the mountain to honor its spiritual connection to Tibetan Buddhism.

The town of Shengping, located 20 kilometers east of the mountain, serves as the main access point for visitors to the Kawagarbo region.

Local authorities banned climbing attempts in 2001, maintaining Kawagarbo's status as an unclimbed peak due to religious and cultural considerations.
