Capital Museum, Art museum in Yuetan, Beijing, China
The Capital Museum is an art museum in Beijing that houses over 400,000 artifacts in a modern building incorporating traditional Chinese architectural elements. The structure contains multiple exhibition halls organized to display different collections and periods.
The museum was established in 1981 and underwent a major transformation in 2006 when it relocated to its current location to accommodate expanding collections. This move marked a turning point that allowed the institution to present its holdings more comprehensively.
The exhibitions display bronze work, ceramics, calligraphy, and paintings that reflect how Beijing's artistic traditions developed over many centuries. You can see objects that reveal shifts in local tastes and craftsmanship through different eras.
The museum opens Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and offers free admission to permanent exhibitions. Plan enough time to explore the different halls at a comfortable pace without rushing.
The building features a grand copper wall decorated with traditional Chinese designs along its exterior. The cylindrical entrance hall contains a digital water curtain that creates an unexpected effect when visitors first arrive.
