Yuyuantan Park, Urban park in Ganjiakou Subdistrict, China.
Yuyuantan Park is an urban park in western Beijing built around a large central lake surrounded by walking paths, open lawns, and tree-lined areas. The grounds are divided into several sections, some more wooded and others open, giving the park a varied feel as you move through it.
The site was shaped during the Qing Dynasty, when work carried out for the imperial court created the lake by redirecting local spring water. In the 20th century, the grounds were opened to the public and gradually developed into the park that exists today.
Every spring, cherry blossom trees draw large crowds to the western part of the park, where people gather to watch the flowers and take photos. This seasonal event has become a local tradition that many Beijing families look forward to each year.
The park covers a wide area, so comfortable shoes and enough time are worth planning for if you want to see more than the lakeside. Boats are available to rent on the lake, which is a good option for those who prefer a slower pace.
The CCTV transmission tower, one of the tallest broadcasting structures in China, stands just outside the park and is visible from many points along the paths. This makes the park one of the few green spaces in Beijing where a major piece of national broadcast infrastructure forms part of the view.
