Military Museum of the Chinese People's Revolution
Military Museum of the Chinese People's Revolution, Military museum in Yangfangdian, Beijing, China
This institution comprises a main building with ten exhibition halls organized chronologically from revolutionary conflict through modern military development. The grounds span 136,000 square meters and include two outdoor areas for displaying large military vehicles and aircraft. The central tower reaches 94.7 meters in height and features an eight-meter army emblem at its summit, visible throughout the surrounding district.
Founded in 1960 as one of ten major projects commemorating the tenth anniversary of the People's Republic, the facility quickly became the central repository for documenting military developments. During the Cultural Revolution, it closed temporarily before reopening in the 1980s with expanded collections. Between 2012 and 2017, the building underwent extensive renovation and expansion work that significantly increased exhibition space and introduced modern presentation technologies.
This institution preserves extensive collections documenting the military development of the People's Republic of China, including weapons, uniforms, documents, and personal effects of significant military figures. It serves as a public education facility promoting understanding of military history and the role of armed forces in Chinese society. The site receives millions of annual visitors including school groups and military delegations from various countries, functioning as a major patriotic education base.
Entry is free daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with last admission at 4:00 PM. Visitors must present valid identification and pass through security screening. One of the most notable displays includes a fully assembled nuclear missile model illustrating the country's technological advancement. The outdoor sections present over 250 large military vehicles and aircraft, including rare Soviet models from the 1950s and domestically developed Chinese tanks and fighter aircraft from different eras.
