Beijing Zoo, Zoo in Xizhimen, Beijing, China.
Beijing Zoo is a large zoological garden in Xicheng District that combines ponds, small lakes and traditional Chinese garden elements across its grounds. Paths wind between enclosures, covered walkways and planted courtyards that recall historical park layouts.
The site was established in 1906 as an experimental farm and small animal enclosure under the imperial ministry for agriculture, industry and commerce of the Qing dynasty. After the revolution, the grounds were gradually expanded and converted into a public zoo that remains in operation today.
The name recalls the agricultural exhibition held here during imperial times, when animals from distant lands were first displayed. Today, Chinese families visit on weekends to stroll between pavilions and bridges while children watch animals up close.
Visitors reach the zoo through Beijing Zoo Station on Metro Line 4 or several bus routes that serve different parts of the city. Those arriving early in the morning find quieter paths and can watch animals before larger groups arrive.
The aquarium within the zoo occupies a large indoor space and features marine mammals in separate pools with glass tunnels. Visitors can walk through these tunnels and watch fish and aquatic animals swim overhead, which especially fascinates children.
