Sitong Bridge, Interchange bridge in Haidian District, China
Sitong Bridge is a road interchange in Haidian District that connects the north side of the third ring road with Zhongguancun Street. The structure was built with four massive concrete columns and carries traffic above the busy ring road, facilitating movement between major arterial roads in northern Beijing.
The structure was built in 1995 as part of Beijing's infrastructure expansion and took its name from Sitong Corporation, the company that financed the project. It has since functioned as a major traffic junction in a rapidly developing urban area.
The bridge became a focal point for public expression when residents gathered there in 2022 to voice their concerns and demands. This moment remains part of how people remember and talk about this structure in the city.
The interchange is easily reached by public transportation and sits near Renmin University, with bus stops at both ends. Pedestrian access is limited for safety reasons since the structure is primarily designed for vehicle traffic.
Following events in 2022, the structure's signage was removed and its name deleted from digital mapping services, although transit stops retained their official designations. This action turned the interchange into an interesting example of how infrastructure can draw broader public attention in urban spaces.
