Beijing Aquarium, Indoor aquarium in Xicheng District, China
Beijing Aquarium is a large indoor facility in a densely built area with multiple themed galleries housing various aquatic species. The building features large tanks with coral environments and a long tunnel passage where visitors walk past schools of fish.
The facility opened in 1999 as the largest inland installation of its kind in China. It introduced northern inland populations to marine habitats and ocean life for the first time.
The facility displays marine animals across sections that represent different water zones, letting visitors observe reef fish and sea creatures in their recreated habitats. The spaces are arranged to reflect natural environments, helping people connect with ocean life they might not otherwise encounter.
The facility is easily accessible by subway and sits next to a major zoo, making it convenient for a full day of activities. The entire space is indoors, so visitors can explore comfortably regardless of weather conditions.
One hall is dedicated to a rainforest environment and displays tropical freshwater fish and plants from the Amazon region, offering a completely different water world from the marine sections. This space takes visitors from ocean habitats directly into South American ecosystems.
