Stonecutters Island, former island in Hong Kong
Stonecutters Island is a former island in Sham Shui Po District that was connected to the mainland through land reclamation. Today it houses a sewage treatment plant that has processed wastewater for the city since the late 1990s, featuring underground facilities and compact treatment structures.
The site served as a quarry in earlier times, later became a Royal Navy base, and was repurposed during World War II for unconventional operations. By the 1990s, land reclamation merged it with the mainland and transformed it into a modern utility infrastructure.
The island is not open to the public because it houses military and utility operations. Visitors can only view it from a distance, though occasional open days do occur, though they draw large crowds.
During World War II, Japanese soldiers raised snakes on the island to produce medicines for military use. This unusual chapter is little remembered today but remains part of local histories, showing how the place was repurposed during wartime.
