Stonecutters Bridge, Cable-stayed bridge in Kwai Tsing District, Hong Kong
This cable-stayed bridge spans Rambler Channel with a main span of 3,340 feet (1,018 meters) and reaches a total length of approximately 1 mile (1.6 kilometers), making it one of the longest cable-stayed bridges in the world.
Construction of the bridge began in April 2004 and was completed in December 2009, when it officially opened to traffic on December 20, providing a crucial connection between the mainland and Stonecutters Island.
The bridge received the 2009 Tanaka Award from the Japan Society of Civil Engineers and the 2010 Supreme Award from the Institution of Structural Engineers in the United Kingdom, recognizing its outstanding engineering achievements.
The structure carries Route 8, a major expressway with three lanes in each direction, and allows ships up to 241 feet (73.5 meters) in height to pass beneath, supporting heavy maritime traffic through Hong Kong's port facilities.
The twin towers rise approximately 968 feet (295 meters) high and are constructed from reinforced concrete with stainless steel cladding, designed specifically to withstand typhoon winds and severe weather conditions common in the region.
