Tsing Yi Pier, defunct pier in Tsing Yi, Hong Kong
Tsing Yi Pier is a ferry terminal on the east side of Tsing Yi Island, situated on reclaimed land and facing Rambler Channel. It features a simple walkway extending over the water, bordered by nearby housing estates and continuous boat traffic.
The pier was built before 1961 to enable water travel for residents and replaced an earlier pier in Tsing Yi Town that was buried during land reclamation work. During the 1960s, it connected the island to Tsuen Wan and Central, serving as a key transport link during the city's growth.
The pier serves as a gathering point for residents of nearby housing estates like Greenfield Garden and Serene Garden, who pass through or pause here as part of their daily routines. Locals watch boats come and go, and the waterfront becomes a place where people naturally connect with their neighborhood and the water that surrounds them.
The pier is easily reached on foot from Tsing Yi MTR station in about seven minutes, and multiple bus lines serve the nearby stops. Signage in Chinese and English clearly guides visitors, and the footpaths are straightforward to navigate.
In June 2024, a cargo ship accidentally collided with the pier, causing damage though fortunately without injuries. The incident reveals how active commercial shipping in Rambler Channel is and how closely busy maritime routes exist alongside this local waterfront.
