Lanzhou University, university in Lanzhou, Gansu province, China
Lanzhou University is a large institution in Lanzhou in Gansu province. It operates across multiple campus locations throughout the city, with modern buildings alongside older structures and numerous trees and open study areas spread between them. The main campus in the city center houses nearly 20,000 undergraduates and over 5,000 graduate students pursuing about 100 different majors, from sciences to history.
The university was founded in 1909 as the Gansu School of Law and Politics and went through several name changes before becoming Lanzhou Sun Yat-sen University in 1928. Under the leadership of Deng Chungao from 1929 to 1936, the school expanded and developed important academic programs, establishing itself as a leading institution in northwestern China.
The university's name reflects its founder and location in the city. Visitors can see daily how students gather in groups to study, meet in green spaces, and participate in clubs and activities beyond the classroom. The school colors of blue and black appear throughout the campus and express a strong sense of community.
The main campus is centrally located in the city and easy to access, while additional sites and a new campus nearby offer further learning spaces. Visitors should know the campus is busy but not overwhelming, making it possible to walk around peacefully and explore the facilities.
Specialized laboratories on campus focus on how plants survive in dry areas, research that is crucial for farming in water-scarce regions of China. Another laboratory develops new methods to study materials using magnets and other tools, showing how science applies to local challenges.
