Kowloon Shangri-La, hotel in Hong Kong
Kowloon Shangri-La is a large hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui, on the Kowloon peninsula side of Hong Kong. It offers over 600 rooms and suites across multiple floors, along with seven restaurants, bars, a bakery, and a fitness center with a pool.
The hotel opened in the mid-1980s, at a time when Tsim Sha Tsui was developing into one of Hong Kong's main areas for visitors. It has been renovated several times since then and has received many international awards over the years.
The hotel takes its name from Shangri-La, the hidden paradise from James Hilton's 1937 novel "Lost Horizon." Large murals in the lobby depict this legendary mountain world, drawing on classical East Asian painting traditions.
The hotel sits close to both the Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station and the Star Ferry pier, making it easy to reach different parts of the city. Guests on foot can get to nearby shops, street markets, and the waterfront promenade within a short walk.
The hotel replaces the carpet inside its elevators every night to show the day of the week. Many guests only notice this after several days and find it an unexpected touch that few other hotels in the world practice.
