Sanfang Qixiang

Sanfang Qixiang is a historic residential neighborhood in Fuzhou composed of three main lanes and seven alleys connected by a network of streets. The preserved dwellings date primarily from the Ming and Qing periods, showcasing traditional architectural styles from those eras.

The neighborhood began during the Tang Dynasty and expanded into a residential area during the Ming and Qing periods. These later dynasties shaped the district's current character and the structures that remain today.

Artisans working with traditional paper cutting and leather crafts still practice methods passed down through generations in their workshops. Visitors can watch these craftspeople at work and purchase handmade items directly where they are created.

The neighborhood is best explored on foot as the narrow lanes are not suitable for vehicles. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, and visitors should allow time to wander through side passages where workshops and small shops are located.

Local craftspeople produce traditional building materials using specialized techniques for authentic restoration work throughout the district. This craft ensures that the neighborhood's historical character is maintained as structures are carefully repaired.
