Zhenhai Tower, Fuzhou, Military tower on Mount Ping, Fuzhou, China
Zhenhai Tower is a five-story building on Pingshan Mountain in Fuzhou, built in the traditional Chinese style with wooden beams and glazed ceramic roof tiles. The exterior is painted red and the curved roof is visible from many parts of the city below.
The tower was first built during the Ming Dynasty in the late 14th century and was used as a military lookout to watch over the city and its waterways. It was destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries, with the most recent restoration completed in the 20th century.
Inside the tower, displays focus on the maritime history of the region and the role of the port in connecting China to the outside world. Visitors can see old maps, trade objects, and documents that bring this story to life.
Reaching the tower involves climbing stairs up the mountain, so comfortable shoes are a good idea. The view from the top is best on clear days, and the site tends to be quieter in the morning than in the afternoon.
From the top of the tower, the Min River and the Wulong River can be seen meeting below the mountain at the same time. This view explains why the location was considered so valuable for military observation in the past.
