Flower Lane Church, Protestant church in Gulou District, Fuzhou, China
Flower Lane Church is a granite chapel on East Street in Gulou that can hold about 1000 people in its main hall. The building consists of older religious spaces and a modern addition built in 2014.
The church was founded in 1863 when the American Methodist Episcopal Mission arrived in Fuzhou and purchased property on East Street. The site today is where a former royal residence from the Ryukyuan kingdom once stood before being bought for religious purposes in 1915.
The building brings together Western and Chinese architectural styles, creating a space where different religious traditions meet. Visitors can see this blending clearly in how the structure is designed and used today.
The building sits at a street corner and is easily reached on foot, with the main church and modern spaces for various activities. Visitors should know that it is actively used on most days and may not always be freely open to walk through.
The land was originally the seat of a Ryukyuan royal palace during the Qing era, making it a place with multiple layers of history. This real background connects local east Asian kingdoms with later Western religious presence.
