Sai Kung West Country Park, Country park and national park in Sai Kung Peninsula, Hong Kong
The Wan Tsai Extension spreads across natural terrain featuring coastal landscapes and mountain paths along the northeastern shore. The area provides various hiking and mountain biking routes together with several camping grounds for visitors.
A former borrow area was transformed into a protected extension of Sai Kung West Country Park in 1996. The government converted this degraded site through reforestation and conservation efforts into a functioning park.
Several remote Hakka villages such as Pak Sha O display traditional architecture and rural ways of living that remain visible today. Visitors can observe how residents maintain their ancestral homes and farming practices within the park.
The area is accessible by public transport connecting to the Pak Tam Chung entrance, from where visitors can start their activities. Good footwear is important as the paths are varied and visitors should be prepared for different terrain.
The restored forest area supports rare animal populations such as Chinese Pangolins and Masked Palm Civets that inhabit the mixed woodlands. These species require large connected areas to survive, which demonstrates the conservation value of this extension.
