Plover Cove Country Park, Coastal nature reserve in Northeastern New Territories, Hong Kong
Plover Cove Country Park Extension is a coastal nature reserve in Northeastern New Territories that includes Double Haven islets and a marine park with diverse ecosystems. The area features geological formations and habitats that spread along the shoreline and underwater.
The original protected area was established in 1979, with a northern expansion later added to safeguard natural habitats and traditional village settlements. This expansion allowed for protection of additional threatened areas along the coast.
Wu Kau Tang village in the park shows how people built homes using local materials and methods suited to the landscape. The traditional Hakka houses with tiled roofs and bamboo groves reveal daily practices that shaped the community for centuries.
You can reach the park by green minibus from Tai Po Market or take weekend ferry services from Ma Liu Shui to Lai Chi Wo. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water, as trails vary in surface and shade along the way.
A Geoheritage Centre documents rare butterfly species found here, including the yellow coster and bi-spot royal. These insects serve as signs of ecosystem health and draw visitors interested in observing nature.
