Yau Oi Estate, Public rental housing estate in Tuen Mun, Hong Kong.
Yau Oi Estate is a large residential complex in Tuen Mun with eleven residential blocks containing approximately 9,000 housing units. The development was built on land reclaimed from the sea and now houses tens of thousands of residents in closely built structures.
Construction of this residential complex took place between 1979 and 1982, making it the third public housing estate in Tuen Mun.The project emerged during a period when Hong Kong needed to expand its housing supply for a rapidly growing population.
The estate shapes everyday life for many families and creates a place where people from different backgrounds live together and maintain community ties. The shops and schools within it show how the place functions as a living neighborhood where residents find what they need for daily routines.
The neighborhood is well served by public transportation and has shops, schools, and healthcare facilities for everyday needs.Visitors can explore the area on foot and find walkways between buildings and green spaces for relaxation.
At completion, this residential complex was Hong Kong's largest newly built public housing development constructed entirely on reclaimed land. The construction on artificially created ground remains visible today in the flat terrain and modern infrastructure throughout the site.
