Lao She Memorial Hall, Literary museum in Donghuamen Subdistrict, Beijing, China
Lao She Memorial Hall is a literary museum housed in a traditional residence with multiple rooms displaying the author's belongings, manuscripts, and photographs. The building shows how he lived and worked, with original furnishings and documents representing different periods of his life.
The residence became the author's home in 1950 and remained so until 1966, a period when he produced many important literary works. This location marks a crucial phase in his life that ended during the Cultural Revolution.
The name Red Persimmon Courtyard comes from two fruit trees that the author planted in 1954 and that still stand in the yard today. Visitors walking through can see these trees and get a sense of how he shaped his own living space.
The museum sits in the old city area and is easily walkable from downtown, with clear signage in the hutong alley. The best times to visit are mornings or on weekdays when there are fewer visitors.
The author's works were translated into more than thirty languages, showing the worldwide reach of his writing. One novel in particular drew major attention across many countries and made him one of the most read Chinese authors internationally.
