Guardian Art Center

Guardian Art Center is an art museum made of glass and granite with two distinct volumes, standing near the Forbidden City entrance. The building combines small stacked blocks that echo neighboring hutong houses with an elevated glass ring wrapping around the entire structure.

The building was established as China's first custom-built auction house, designed to display classical artworks and support international art trade. This founding marked a turning point in connecting Chinese collectors and artists with the broader world market.

The lower section displays perforated grey basalt patterns that reference traditional Chinese landscape painting. This design choice connects modern architecture with classical artistic traditions in a way visitors can see directly.

The location on Wangfujing Street in Beijing's Dongcheng District makes it easy to reach from other attractions near the Forbidden City. The daily opening times allow you to explore exhibitions and auction events depending on what is happening during your visit.

The roof design uses an unexpected approach: multiple small stacked blocks mimic the traditional hutong architecture of the neighborhood, while a floating glass band holds everything together. This blend of traditional form and modern material creates a visual contrast that visitors often miss when entering the building.
