Former residence of Zhang Taiyan in Hangzhou

The former residence in Hangzhou combines Chinese architecture with Western style elements across three buildings arranged as a complex. The structures feature wooden windows with geometric patterns and classical European columns throughout their spaces.

A nationalist scholar and thinker lived here during the 1930s, writing extensively while receiving visitors of high intellectual standing. The house became a place of intellectual exchange during an important period of modern Chinese history.

The residence bears the name of a major nationalist thinker and shows how traditional Chinese spaces coexist with Western design elements today. Visitors see wooden lattice windows and Roman columns throughout that make this blend visible.

The grounds are usually open for self-guided exploration, but visitors should allow time to walk through the various rooms and appreciate both the architecture and displayed objects. Doing some reading beforehand helps one understand the historical connections between the spaces and their significance.

During renovation, three different shades of green were incorporated into the buildings, with each tone meant to symbolize the natural garden and different aspects of the former resident's life. This subtle use of color is something visitors often overlook, yet it contributes significantly to the visual and symbolic character of the place.
