Baiguishan Shuiku, stuwmeer in de Volksrepubliek China
Baiguishan Shuiku is a large reservoir in Pingdingshan that stores water for the city and surrounding regions. It functions as part of a major water transfer system bringing water from the Yangtze River to northern areas, serving drinking water, industrial, and agricultural needs.
The reservoir was built to manage water resources for the city and surrounding areas in response to regional water demands. During a severe drought in 2014, water levels dropped dangerously until over 50 million cubic meters were transferred from Danjiangkou Reservoir to prevent shortages affecting more than a million residents.
The name reflects the local geography and the water management needs of the region. The surroundings feature wide green corridors planted with evergreen trees, fruit trees, and flowers, maintained by local authorities to protect the water and create spaces for community use.
The area is easily accessible with wide paths along the banks where visitors can walk, picnic, or observe nature. Water levels fluctuate with seasons and usage patterns, so the reservoir presents different appearances depending on the time of year.
The reservoir can contain heavy metals and sediments deposited at the bottom that may re-enter the water if disturbed, with concentrations varying in different areas. These hidden layers serve as a reminder that even calm-appearing waters hold complex ecological challenges requiring careful monitoring.
