He Art Museum, Private art museum in Shunde District, China.
The He Art Museum is a private art museum in the Shunde District of Guangdong Province, dedicated to modern Chinese and contemporary international art. The building was designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando and is built in raw concrete, with a central double-helix staircase linking the different gallery floors.
The museum was commissioned by the He family, founders of the Midea home appliance company, and opened in 2020 after several years of construction. The project marked Tadao Ando's first major work in southern China and brought international architectural attention to Shunde.
The He Art Museum shows works by Chinese artists alongside objects from the Shunde region, all displayed within the same spaces. Walking through the galleries, visitors can directly sense how local craft traditions and contemporary art share the same walls.
The museum is located in Shunde District, south of Guangzhou, and is most easily reached by car or ride-hailing service since public transport connections are limited. Once inside, the layout is clear, but taking a moment at the entrance to understand the building's structure before moving through the galleries helps to follow the route.
The building has no sharp corners: every room and corridor follows curved lines, which makes moving through it feel different from a standard museum visit. This curved geometry is echoed in the central staircase, which also acts as a natural reference point even in the lower-lit sections of the building.
