Botanical Garden Potsdam, Botanical garden near Sanssouci Park, Germany.
The Botanical Garden Potsdam is a garden in Potsdam with ten greenhouses and outdoor areas cultivating around 9,000 different plant species from around the world. The grounds span multiple hectares and combine enclosed and open spaces for different climate zones and plant families.
The garden was founded after World War II and initially came under Soviet military administration, later operating as a branch of the Moscow Botanical Garden. In 1950, it gained its own identity and developed into an independent scientific and public institution.
The garden displays collections of traditional Chinese medicinal herbs and houses threatened native plant species. Visitors can observe how different cultures use plants and which species need protection today.
The garden is open daily, with hours varying by season, opening at 9:30 a.m. and closing between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. depending on the time of year. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as the grounds are flat but offer extensive paths to explore.
The garden holds some of the smallest known plant species, such as tiny duckweed in pin-sized proportions. At the same time, giant sequoias grow there, reaching remarkable heights and showing how different plants can be.
