Кельгайм

Kelheim stands at the meeting point of the Altmühl and Danube rivers, surrounded by natural formations and Germanic architectural structures at 345 meters elevation.

The settlement originated from an Iron Age oppidum during the La Tène period, later identified as the Celtic city of Alcimoennis mentioned by Ptolemy in his Geography.

The Hall of Liberation, designed by architect Leo von Klenze, stands on Michelsberg Hill as a monument commemorating the German victories over Napoleonic forces.

The town provides direct access to walking paths along the Danube riverbanks, connecting visitors to both the Altmühl Valley Nature Park and Weltenburg Abbey.

The ancient ramparts of Kelheim feature pfostenschlitzmauer construction, incorporating vertical wooden posts set within stone facings across the river promontory.
