Mshatta Facade, Desert palace facade in Museum Island, Germany

The limestone facade extends 33 meters in length and 5 meters in height, featuring intricate relief carvings of animals, plants, and geometric patterns.

The facade originated from an 8th-century Umayyad palace near Amman, and Sultan Abdul Hamid II presented it to German Emperor Wilhelm II in 1903.

The decorative elements demonstrate a combination of Persian, Greek, and Roman artistic influences through the representations of mythical creatures and natural motifs.

The facade resides in the Museum of Islamic Art at the Pergamon Museum, which visitors can access through the James-Simon-Galerie entrance.

The design includes triangular sections where natural enemies, such as predators and prey, drink together from the same vessel in limestone reliefs.
