Market Gate of Miletus

Market Gate of Miletus, Archaeological find at Pergamon Museum, Berlin, Germany

The Market Gate of Miletus is a marble structure measuring roughly 29 meters wide and 17 meters high, featuring three access openings and decorative friezes. The gate stands on two levels and combines functional design with ornamental embellishment.

This gate originated in the second century as part of the ancient marketplace of Miletus in Asia Minor. German archaeologists excavated it between 1903 and 1907 and transported over 750 tons of marble fragments to Berlin for reconstruction.

The gate displays Roman architectural elements including Corinthian columns and relief sculptures depicting bulls and floral patterns across two levels. These ornaments show how Romans designed marketplaces with elaborate artistic detail.

The gate is located at the Pergamon Museum and can be viewed during regular opening hours. Information panels in multiple languages help visitors understand the architectural details and historical background of the monument.

The upper level of the gate contains niches that originally held statues of Roman emperors shown in combat scenes. These rare depictions offer insight into how Rome's rulers presented their power.
