Museum for prehistory and early history

The Museum for Prehistory and Early History holds over 200,000 artifacts from the Paleolithic period, ancient times, and the Middle Ages in a comprehensive overview of human development. The collection is housed in the Neues Museum and displays tools, pottery, jewelry, and other items that document daily life.

The museum started in 1855 as a Collection of Nordic Antiquities and moved several times before settling in the Neues Museum in 2009. These relocations reflect Berlin's shifting history and changing institutional landscape.

The name points to its focus on human development from the earliest times through the Middle Ages. Visitors can see how everyday objects and tools show how people lived in different periods.

Access is through the Neues Museum on Museum Island, where several institutions are housed. It is wise to allow plenty of time, as the collection is extensive and spread across multiple exhibition areas.

A particular treasure is a bronze cuirass from Stična, one of only five completely preserved examples from the 7th century BC. This rare piece shows the craftsmanship and wealth of ancient South Eastern European cultures.
