Temple d'Esculape

Temple d'Esculape is a Roman religious complex situated near the Moselle River in Trier. The site once featured a central structure with a large platform and additional buildings arranged across the expansive grounds.

Construction of this sanctuary began in the later 1st century and it became an important religious hub. Subsequent renovations in the 2nd century strengthened its role as a center for devotion and healing practices.

This sanctuary was dedicated to Asclepius and drew people seeking healing and divine protection. A large statue of the god stood in the northern chamber, serving as the spiritual focal point of the complex.

The remaining ruins are preserved beneath a modern parking structure on Hinter dem Zollamt street. You can view the ancient walls integrated into the contemporary building's design.

Archaeologists uncovered a cache of more than 2,500 gold coins buried near the temple's edge in 1993. This remarkable discovery is now on display at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum and reveals the site's former prosperity.
