Heidelberg-Altstadt station, Railway station in Heidelberg, Germany
Heidelberg-Altstadt is a railway station located on the eastern edge of the old town next to the historic Karlstor gate. The building has two platforms and connects the city directly to trains heading toward nearby towns and regional destinations.
The original building was constructed between 1872 and 1873 as part of the Neckar Valley Railway, but underwent complete reconstruction during the 1930s economic period. The structure that stands today was rebuilt between 1934 and 1936 and remains largely unchanged since then.
Since 1995, the station has housed the Kulturzentrum Karlstorbahnhof, where you can find art exhibitions, theater performances, and music events happening regularly throughout the year. This cultural space has transformed the station into a gathering place for artists and visitors beyond its role as a transit hub.
The station operates from early morning until late evening daily, with regular trains to nearby towns and major cities in the region. The location near the old town makes it easy to explore on foot, with many attractions within walking distance.
The station was officially renamed from Heidelberg Karlstor to Heidelberg-Altstadt in December 2008 to better reflect its location within the historic center. This change helped clarify its role as the main railway gateway to the old town district.
