Hochkalter, Alpine peak in Berchtesgaden Alps, Germany
Hochkalter is an alpine peak in the Berchtesgaden Alps that rises to about 2607 meters with steep limestone cliffs and large boulder fields. The mountain sits within Berchtesgaden National Park and offers several routes for climbing.
The first documented ascent took place in 1830 when Prince-Bishop Schwarzenberg completed the climb and established the initial route through the Ofen valley. This achievement marked the beginning of the peak's development for mountaineering.
The mountain forms part of the Berchtesgaden Alps and shapes the hiking experience through its striking rock walls. For visitors, it represents the alpine landscape that has drawn people to Bavaria for generations.
The Blaueishütte mountain refuge at about 1651 meters offers accommodation and serves as a base for mountain walks in the area. The best time to hike is from June to September when the trails are free of snow.
A massive rockfall around 3500 years ago displaced about 15 million cubic meters of rock and created the present-day Hintersee. This natural lake is now a quiet spot at the foot of the mountain.
